How To Deal With Betrayal

Have you ever experienced the sting of betrayal? I call it Misplaced Trust. There is no pain like the pain of betrayal because it is a violation of trust that cannot be reversed. Once a person has betrayed you, they can never change what happened. However, you can change the affect that it has on your soul. Jesus is the ultimate example of how to deal with betrayal. I often think of how he handled his family rejecting him, his closest friends participating in plots against him, and the people whom he had invested most of his time helping, turned against him and crucified him. 

One of the reasons that betrayal is so painful is because trust has been violated. In fact, if you never trusted a person, their betrayal of you would only affirm to you that they are not worthy of your trust. In Matthew 12:46-50 Jesus was at an event and his family members came and requested to speak to him. He sent a reply to them that wasn't as acceptable as you might think. (Read the passage below)

There will always be those who persecute you and violate your trust; some will even believe that they are doing the will of God. Nevertheless, your freedom from the pain of it is directly tied to the level of trust you have invested in them. You can be healed from the pain, and even forgive those who betray you. However, you are never required to trust those who prove to be untrustworthy. It is foolish to continue to trust people who go out of their way to show you that they can be bought and their only reason for being in your life is because they feel someday you will be their ticket to success. A friend of mine says “I may be your guide, but I am not your ride.' This year, release yourself from toxic people who only come into your life to take what they can get. It's time to move forward.

Matthew 12:46-50 (The Message)

“While he was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers showed up. They were outside trying to get a message to him. Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are out here, wanting to speak with you.”
Jesus didn’t respond directly, but said, “Who do you think my mother and brothers are?” He then stretched out his hand toward his disciples. “Look closely. These are my mother and brothers. Obedience is thicker than blood. The person who obeys my heavenly Father’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
